A Message From Our Founder
At Home Shield Coating®, protecting homes is more than our business. It has been my life’s work since 1999.
My family moved to Chicago when I was three years old, and I grew up in the working-class neighborhood of Logan Square. Attending Chicago Public Schools and being raised in that community taught me the importance of hard work, persistence, honesty, and keeping your word. Those values still guide how we operate Home Shield Coating® today.
After earning my real estate license and working with Century 21, I quickly realized that my passion was not simply selling homes. I wanted to help homeowners protect one of the largest investments they would ever make.
In 1997, I purchased a House Doctors Handyman Service franchise. That experience gave me a firsthand look at the problems homeowners repeatedly faced: peeling paint, exterior cracks, water intrusion, wood rot, poor water management, and years of deferred maintenance.
I also saw how often homeowners paid to repaint their properties, only to experience the same problems again just a few years later. I became convinced there had to be a better and more permanent way to protect a home’s exterior.
Everything Changed in 1999
While visiting Miami Beach in 1999, I was introduced to a commercial-grade exterior coating system unlike anything I had seen before.
I was told the coating had been developed for commercial and industrial buildings and could protect exterior walls for more than 30 years. I remember responding, “Listen, I’m a House Doctor. Nothing lasts more than five years on an exterior wall.”
But this was not simply another house paint.
It was a heavy-duty protective coating designed to create a thicker, more flexible, and longer-lasting finish on hotels, commercial buildings, and industrial properties. Instead of applying a thin layer of paint that would eventually crack, peel, or fade, the system was designed to form a durable protective barrier over the exterior surface.
I immediately saw its potential for residential homes. But before I could recommend it to homeowners, I needed to answer one important question:
Could it survive the brutal freeze-and-thaw cycles of a Chicago winter?
How Home Shield Coating® Got Its Name
After several brainstorming sessions, we settled on the name HomeShield. It felt like the perfect fit. After all, what better name could there be for a thick, flexible, rubber-like coating designed to shield and protect the exterior of a home?
From there, we began applying, testing, and refining the system under real-world conditions. We wanted to know how it would perform through the brutal winters and repeated freeze-thaw cycles of Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as the intense sunlight, humidity, and hurricane-driven rain of Florida.
One of our earliest customers was a gentleman named Louis Skydell from Evanston, Illinois.
Louis asked me, “Mike, do you really believe this product will last 30 years?”
I gave him the only answer I could honestly give.
“Louis, I’m not sure. It has performed extremely well on commercial and industrial properties, but we haven’t been in business for 30 years yet.”
That conversation took place more than 25 years ago.
Louis laughed and said, “I’m repainting every five years anyway. The winters here are brutal, especially because the side of my house faces Lake Michigan. If it lasts 10 years, I’ll be happy. You’ll have saved me the cost and hassle of two paint jobs.”
I replied, “Louis, in the worst-case scenario, I’ll come back and repaint your house for free.”
He smiled and said, “Mike, you’ve got a deal.”
More than two decades later, Louis contacted us again. He had even kept the original can of Home Shield Coating® stored in his basement—the same can pictured above.

Home Shield Coating® is a permanent, commercial-grade exterior wall coating that replaces traditional house paint. It’s a two-part system — a waterproofing bonding primer followed by a heavy-duty topcoat — engineered to outlast conventional exterior paint by decades. It’s not paint. It’s a coating that is a commercial-grade coating system designed to provide long-lasting waterproofing and exterior protection far beyond conventional paint.
Is Home Shield Coating® just paint with a fancy name?
No. Traditional paint is roughly 1–2 mils thick. Home Shield Coating® is applied thicker, uses commercial-grade elastomeric and acrylic chemistries, and is engineered to expand and contract with your home. It’s applied approximately 17 times thicker than traditional exterior paint and carries a 30-year combined warranty that goes far beyond the coverage provided with typical exterior paint.
